This Mayan Grandmother (probably from around Solola) tends her grandchild. Her huipil (blouse) is very typical of the Mayans around Lake Atilan, in Guatemala.

San Cristóbal de las Casas

June 12, 2007

— from alight

In celebration, with our Mexican friends, of Cinco de Mayo!

This is in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico, a city in the central highlands of state of Chiapas. …. love the colors.. the interesting garments & wrappings at the women’s waists… and especially how the beautiful Mayan woman is looking with love at the little boy.. :-)

Its from my forever friend, Meem, taken during her trip to Oaxaca, Mexico for Spanish language immersion classes. Here’s what she wrote about this family, with whom she shared conversation and family photographs :

This is a family in San Cristóbal de las Casas. They are Mayan people from Chamula that got kicked out of the village because they are Christian.
(The Chamulans are pagan. They believe Jesus died on the cross… not resurrected… and have John the Baptist on the main altar of their church instead, because he baptized Jesus.
They do ancient healing ceremonies with chickens, soda pop and candles on the church floor that was strewn with pine needles and no furniture … they push the pine needles (love the scent!) away from the part where they are praying.. then stick the many candles right to the tile floor. Men guard the candles until they are totally burned and then scrape the wax off the floor.
All the Catholic Saints have different, interesting pagan meanings there.)

have a warm, bright Cinco de Mayo, mi amigos.
