The two Tz’utujil Mayan boys on either side of the pequeñito (who I assume is their brother) are wearing their traje, or traditional garb. Indigenous people wear their trajes all the time, not only in Semana Santa.

mayan girls

On a eco-tour, we stopped off at a mayan village just outside of the mayan ruins of Coba, Mexico to learn about their culture and eat lunch. this is a picture of a couple of mayan girls hanging out with one girl beading. plus at the village, there was an awesome cenote, which is an underground cavern filled with freshwater, into which we were lowered to go swimming in the middle of the hot muggy day. the ecotour was working with the villagers for some neat projects to keep their lifestyles more sustainable - such as training some of the local village male youths in photgraphy so that they can sell pictures to the passing tourists instead of leaving their village to the cities for work. a lot of tours of native villages have a bad rep of being human zoo tours - like many of the tours in the hilltribe area of northern thailand - but this tour seemed to genuinely work with villagers and was sensitive so that we would not overly intrude or offend cultural norms.
